Refrigerator Condensation Problem

Condensation is a build-up of moisture that sometimes occurs in refrigerators. Although frustrating, it's not entirely unusual to discover condensation in your refrigerator. The problem can arise from a failure of several refrigerator parts. In most cases, however, fixing or replacing the part resolves the issue. The most challenging aspect is usually troubleshooting the exact cause of the condensation build-up.

Faulty Door Gaskets

One of the first things you want to inspect on your refrigerator is its door gaskets. If the door doesn't seal shut, warm, moist air can access the refrigerator cabinet. As a result, the evaporator, which controls humidity levels, must continuously run to adjust for changes in temperature and humidity, and can become overworked and break down. If this occurs, you might find condensation on the refrigerator door and ceiling. Replace broken door gaskets and possibly the evaporator if it's no longer functional.

Clogged Drain Tube

A congested drain tube can cause a pool of water or condensation to develop in your refrigerator. Shut off your refrigerator and slide it away from the wall. Locate the drain tube, which is usually located either at the rear or bottom of the appliance's main compartment. Consult your refrigerator manual if you need help finding the drain tube on your particular model. Once you've found the drain tube, insert a 50-50 blend of bleach and warm water into the tube, using a turkey baster, to clear the clog. Empty the drain pan below the refrigerator cabinet, which should now be filled with liquid.

Leaky Water or Ice Dispenser

If your refrigerator is equipped with a water or ice dispenser, check it for leaks. A leaky compressor valve or cracked water tube can cause water to drip down into your refrigerator and result in condensation. Use a wrench to tighten the compressor valve if it's loose. Run your fingers carefully along the water tube and feel for a crack. In some cases, you might be able to visually identify a fractured tube, depending on its location. Replace a cracked tube to eliminate condensation.

Blocked Vent

An overfilled refrigerator can block the vent that regulates a refrigerator's temperature and humidity level, which can cause moisture to develop on shelves and panels. Remove food containers and bottles that might be hindering airflow. Always make sure the vent is clear and void of obstructions.
